20 Years of Practicing Community

by Robin Bedwell

As part of our 20th anniversary celebration, we’re reflecting on our church’s values through the stories and experiences of our Chets family.

Coming to Chets Creek Church, I didn’t expect to experience the community that I have. I thought that being just a little “seasoned” (aka older, lol), I might be able to share some life experiences with others. God had a different idea. In His sovereignty He put me into a few places of community for my good and His glory.

Community is “a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common.” I’ve experienced this aspect of community as part of the single moms LifeGroup. Even though I have life experiences that I’ve been able to share, the ladies in this LifeGroup have ministered to me far more than I ministered to them. Loving them and being loved by them has been such a blessing. I know that I can count on them for anything. They know me and I know them.

Community is “a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals.” I’ve experienced this with my discipleship group from Chets. The ladies in this group have faced some hard circumstances and it’s been an honor and privilege to walk alongside them for the past two years. God’s amazing love has knit us together and allowed us to build relationships with each other and grow closer to Him. We know He is real because we’ve seen Him in each other.

I’ve also experienced community through the study of God’s Word with others through Bible studies. We learn about God’s character and who He’s made us to be. With women there is a kinship-knowing that we all have struggles and we are here to help each other by studying, learning, praying, and encouraging.

I also serve in ChetsKids and there I’ve found a different kind of community. They have a love that is like no other – no boundaries, hindrances, or conditions. I can kind of see why Jesus loved to have children around Him. Just show up and you will receive some sweet, unconditional “overflowing love.”

When we launched the Southside Campus this year, my son Jeff was named the campus pastor. Being a part of the Southside launch team has brought me back to square one in building community with a new group of people. I am amazed I get to be a part of helping as God grows the Southside Campus and gives vision to Jeff.

I have built a lot of relationships here and have been blessed to be a part of the community of Chets Creek Church!
