BIBLE STUDY METHOD
R.E.A.D. is a method for studying the Bible. It’s not the only one, but it is a helpful one. It includes four steps–read, examine, ask, and do. By reading the Bible on a regular basis in this way, you will get to know the One who made you and loves you.
Read | What does the text say?
Read means slowing down and paying attention to what the passage actually says. Start by observing the basics: Who is speaking? Who is being addressed? What is happening and where? Look for repeated words, key details, and the flow of the story. Approach Scripture like a personal letter from God—not a task to finish quickly. When you read thoughtfully instead of rushing, you begin to see things you would otherwise miss. Good observation lays a strong foundation for understanding, allowing Scripture to speak before you interpret or apply. Read with curiosity and openness, letting God’s Word shape what you notice and how you listen.
Examine | What does the text mean?
Examine goes deeper, asking why the passage was written and what it meant to the original audience. Explore the context: Who wrote this? What was happening when this was written? How would the first hearers have understood these words? Examining helps move from gathering information to discovering meaning. It prevents taking verses out of context and helps you see how each story fits into the larger story of Scripture. By paying attention to history, culture, and connections across the Bible, you develop a clearer interpretation and a richer understanding of what God is communicating. Good examination makes application solid and meaningful. A good Study Bible or trusted commentary can help you as you examine Scripture. See a list of recommended resources at chetscreek.com/bible.
Ask | Ask God to speak.
Ask shifts your attention from information to transformation through prayer. After observing and examining the passage, talk to God about what you’ve seen. Ask Him to shape your heart, correct your thinking, and help you trust and obey what He reveals in His Word. Prayer keeps the journey from becoming only academic—it invites the Holy Spirit to apply Scripture personally. Ask God to show you what needs to change, what to hold on to, and how this truth meets your life today. Depend on Him for understanding, wisdom, and the courage to respond. Asking keeps you humble, teachable, and centered on God instead of your own effort.
Do | What should I do in response to this text?
How should this change my thoughts, choices, and relationships moving forward? Do is where Scripture moves from the page into daily life. After hearing from God and asking Him to work in you, consider how this passage should shape your thoughts, choices, habits, and relationships today. What step of obedience is God inviting you to take? What attitude needs to shift? What action can you pursue in faith? Do is not about earning God’s approval—it’s about responding to His love through practical obedience. When you live out what you’ve read, the truth becomes real, and your life begins to reflect the character of Jesus. Even a small step of obedience can make a big difference in your daily life. Sometimes doing means sharing. God may bring someone’s name to your mind who would be encouraged by what this passage says. Share it with them!
